Let’s be honest: running IR lamps directly over tanks of flammable chemicals in a semiconductor station is a nerve-wracking setup. One tiny spark or a quartz tube that decides to give up the ghost, and you’ve got a disaster on your hands. It’s a high-stakes environment. That’s why we don’t take chances. We combine gold-coating with some pretty heavy-duty sealing to make sure your floor stays safe. Why the gold? Standard quartz lamps throw heat everywhere. We add a thin layer of gold to the envelope to act like a mirror. Instead of letting heat bleed backward, it pushes the infrared energy forward, right where it belongs—on the wafer. The real win here is that the lamp housing stays much cooler. When you aren’t radiating heat into the surrounding air, you drastically lower the risk of accidentally igniting any stray vapors leaking into the heating zone. It’s a simple fix that saves a lot of stress. Locking it down We can’t just leave a lamp exposed in a volatile zone. That’s asking for trouble. Instead, we wrap the lamp in a high-strength quartz or sapphire sleeve, then tuck that into a housing that can handle nasty chemicals. We also use special potting compounds on the lead-in wires. This stops corrosive fumes from creeping into the electrical connections—which is usually where cheap seals fail and the lamp burns out. The “Gotchas” Now, these aren’t just “plug and play” replacements. There are a few things you need to watch out for. Because the gold coating changes how the heat is emitted, you’ll need to tweak your PID controllers. If you don’t, you might overshoot your target temperature. Also, since these lamps concentrate heat so aggressively, make sure your exhaust system is actually strong enough to pull those displaced gases away. We build these things to take a beating.
