
Stop Freezing in the Changing Room: A Better Way to Heat Industrial Spaces
Ever walked into an industrial changing room and felt like you just stepped into a freezer? It happens all the time. You’ve got these massive ceilings and doors swinging open and shut every few minutes. Most places try to fix this with forced-air heaters. But here’s the problem: hot air rises. You end up heating the ceiling while the people on the floor are still shivering. It’s a waste of money and a nightmare for the staff. That’s why we use ceiling-mounted infrared heaters instead. How it actually works Forget about trying to warm up the air. Infrared is different. It sends out waves that go straight to the solid stuff—the people, the benches, the lockers. It feels like stepping into sunlight on a cold day. You feel the warmth almost instantly because the heat is hitting you directly, not floating around the room. Getting the specs right Depending on the space, we usually go with short-wave or medium-wave emitters. If the room is drafty or the wind is whipping through, short-wave is the way to go. It hits the target faster and doesn’t get blown away. One thing to keep in mind: height matters. The higher you mount the heater, the more power (wattage) you’ll need to make sure that warmth actually reaches the floor. Setting it up (and what to watch out for) We put these in the ceiling to keep the floor clear. No bulky equipment in the way. Plus, you can get strategic with it. You can crank up the heat exactly where people are stripping off their gear, and dial it back near the lockers so you aren’t baking the stuff stored inside. But you have to be careful. If you go overboard with the wattage or hang them too low, you’ll end up with “hot spots.” Nobody wants to feel like they’re standing under a heat lamp at a buffet. The trick is to space the emitters out properly and use a dimmer or a controller to fine-tune the temperature. And for heaven’s sake, hook them up to a motion sensor or a timer. There’s no point in burning through electricity when the room is empty.
