
Stopping the Dust: How to Actually Get Zero-Contamination Heating in a Class 100 Room
If you’re running a Class 100 (ISO 5) environment, you already know the nightmare. One tiny flake of paint or a bit of glue off a heater housing, and your whole batch is toast. Standard heaters just aren’t built for this. They tend to flake or leak chemicals the moment they start heating and cooling. We decided to fix that by sticking to the basics: high-purity quartz and some very carefully handled stainless steel.
Why we use high-purity quartz
Most glass just can’t handle the heat without letting off weird gases (VOCs). We use synthetic high-purity quartz instead. It stays stable, even when it’s screaming hot. The best part? The infrared heat goes straight into your workpiece. It doesn’t waste time heating up all the air around it. This is a big deal because it stops those annoying convection currents from kicking up dust from the floor and sending it right onto your product.
The “No-Hiding-Place” Housing
We don’t treat the housing like a simple bracket. It’s more of a shield. We use 316L stainless steel and polish it until it’s a mirror. Why? Because microscopic pits are basically luxury hotels for dust. If the surface is smooth (Ra < 0.4 $\mu$m), the dust has nowhere to land. And we hate rivets. Rivets loosen. Fasteners rattle. So, we TIG weld everything with full-penetration beads, grind them flush, and passivate the metal. No gaps. No crevices. Just a smooth, clean surface.
The Trade-off
Now, here’s the catch. High-purity quartz is brittle. It’s amazing for cleanliness, but it can’t take a hit. If you drop a tool on it or swing the temperature too wildly, it’ll crack. To stop that, make sure your mounting brackets have dampened clamps. It gives the material a little breathing room so it doesn’t snap under stress. We designed these to slide right into your existing lines. We stripped out all the adhesives and coatings you find in those “off-the-shelf” commercial heaters because those are usually where the contamination starts. You get the heat you need without worrying about your air filtration specs.
