It’s about how you actually feel the heat and whether the hardware can survive a steamy shower without dying.
Heating you, not the air
Here’s the thing about old-school heaters: they try to warm up the air. But if you’ve got high ceilings or a vent running, that warm air just floats away. You’re basically paying to heat the ceiling. Infrared is different. It sends out waves that hit your skin and the floor directly. It feels more like standing in the sun. You don’t have to wait for the whole room to warm up—you feel it almost instantly. It’s fast. Really fast.
The battle against steam
Water vapor is a nightmare for electronics. Cheap heaters let moisture sneak inside the casing, which leads to short circuits or those heating elements just burning out prematurely. That’s where the IP rating comes in. Think of it as a seal of approval for waterproofing. When a unit has a high IP rating, the gaskets are tight. Steam and splashes stay out, and the electrical bits stay dry. It means you aren’t replacing the unit every two years because it “just stopped working.”
A few things to keep in mind
There is a trade-off, though. Because these units are sealed tight to keep water out, they don’t “breathe” as well. If you’re cramming a bunch of high-wattage panels into a tiny ceiling space without any room for air to move, you might trip the thermal cutoff. It’s a safety feature, but it’s a pain if it happens every time you turn the heat on. Plus, these arrays pull a decent amount of power. Before you get started, double-check your circuit load. You don’t want your breakers popping on a freezing January morning just because you wanted a warm bathroom.
